ABOUT

This is Hilde Mund. Born in June 1914, she learned to play golf at Hamburger Golf Club in Germany, and went on to win Danish, German and (two) Swiss Opens. She was also my grandmother, and her love of golf has passed through the generations of our family.
I’m Caspar Grauballe (pronounced ‘grau-bell’, where ‘grau’ rhymes with ‘how’), a golf course architect based in Copenhagen, Denmark.
While my own golf game never quite reached the heights of my grandmother’s, I certainly inherited her passion for the sport. From a young age, I was determined to follow a career in golf. I studied Landscape Architecture at Copenhagen University and also attended Harvard Graduate School of Design, USA.

This provided the foundation for a career in golf course design, which began in 1997 with one of the profession’s most respected practitioners, Martin Hawtree. As the third generation of golf course architects in the Hawtree family, Martin created and was trusted with some of the sport’s greatest designs.
During my time with Hawtree Ltd, I was lead associate and in charge of on-site supervision for the creation of Trump International Golf Links in Aberdeen, Scotland, now ranked as one of the world’s best courses. I also had the good fortune to work on all-time greats like Ballybunion, Royal Birkdale and Royal Melbourne.
In 2012, I established my own firm, By Caspar, and now work with golf clubs throughout the Europe (and beyond!) to help make the very best of their courses, and create new designs that are loved by the golfers who play them.
I draw inspiration from the work of historic and classic golf course architects from the ‘Golden Age’ of golf course design, like Harry Colt and Alister MacKenzie, to provide design work that is enduring and appealing to golfers of all abilities.
I am privileged to serve as the President of the European Institute of Golf Course Architects and continue to build my reputation for thoughtful and highly professional work and a long list of satisfied clients.
