Simon’s Golf Club

Location: Kvistgård, Denmark
Project: Renovation of 27-hole course

Opened in 1993 as a 18-hole design by Martin Hawtree, Simon’s Golf Club was extended to 27 holes in 2007, when Caspar Grauballe, as the lead architect for Hawtree, created a new C loop.

The course is considered among the best in Denmark, and has hosted several professional tournaments on the Challenge Tour, European Tour, LET and Staysure Tour, as well as national championships.

By Caspar provides ongoing consultancy to the club, and oversaw a remodelling in 2020. All bunkers and green surrounds redesigned to safeguard the course against the more extreme weather conditions, as well as upgrading playability and strategy.

The bunkers had suffered from increasingly extreme weather, which in turn created a huge amount of repair work after every heavy rain event. It came to a point where the greenkeepers could not keep up with the deterioration of the bunker quality.

By Caspar reduced the number of bunkers, with a focus on making players think their way around the course with bunkers in key positions. Replacing many of the bunkers with run-off areas has improved playability and introduced more variety in the short game around greens.
